I seek peace through meditation. I've mostly retired from society, and I live like a hermit, even though I live in the suburbs. My belief is that peace won't come from the way the world is. It must come from the way I am. So, I practice patience, loving kindness, and attentiveness. Inner stillness is important in my meditative practice. I intend to be still without waiting. Even when my thoughts race, I can be still. And when I'm still, I can be without judgment or expectation, and I can be in the world without demanding to get any special joy. I want to be in the world the way nonhuman animals are in it. To a nonhuman animal, nature isn't a retreat. It's all that exists. They move through it as the only world there is to move through. That's what I want for myself: to be endemic to nature rather than a tourist seeking refuge.

Am I somehow a real wizard? Do I practice some weird religion? I can't blame anyone for asking. Here's the answer: I'm a secular mystic. My clothes are a symbol of my commitment to a life of meditation, contemplation, and peace. It's that simple. I'm aware that my robes and hat evoke fantasy magicians, and I'm not concerned about that. I hope to increase peace in the world around me. The internet offers opportunities to disrupt peace without consequences. I understand that's enticing. Resisting that enticement is a matter of will. Peace is a choice and a way of life. If you want peace, be peaceful.
Maybe you're asking, "How can I have peace when I'm so angry? Doesn't anger demand something other than peace?" And maybe it does, but you don't have to give in to anger's demands. You can have peace even if that's not what the anger wants. Anger is an impulse. Peace is a choice.
