In the dark-field image shown here, a large area of lead glass within this “ruby” is clearly visible, featuring numerous large gas bubbles, some of which are in close proximity to very attractive natural crystals.

In a separate image taken under different lighting conditions, the characteristic blue-violet flashes typically associated with lead glass were not apparent, and I now understand how this could be misleading.

Nevertheless, I believe this example raises an important observation: gemstones can appear quite different when viewed under conditions other than those we are accustomed to.
