Child's Play Activities

Want to create activities for your child at home?

My name is Emily, and I help parents of children aged 0 to 5 years create play-based learning experiences to support their development.

As a parent of a 5-year-old and over 10 years of experience in childcare, I have learnt a thing or two about creating engaging activities for children in their early years.

If you could only give one piece of parenting advice to another parent, what would it be?

Tomorrow I'll be sharing the five things that completely changed the way I think about play, connection and childhood

Child's Play Activities

For years I thought it was my responsibility to stop my daughter from ever feeling bored.

Looking back, I don't think she needed another activity.

She needed time.
πŸ’š Time to wonder.
πŸ’š Time to imagine.
πŸ’š Time to invent.

Now, when she tells me she's bored, I usually smile and say: "You're incredibly creative. I know you'll think of something."

I don't ignore her.

I don't stop plying with her all together.

I just don't feel responsible for filling every quiet moment anymore.

πŸ’š What's the most creative thing your child has done after saying, "I'm bored"?

Child's Play Activities

Do you ever feel guilty because you don't enjoy imaginative play?

P.S. I'm talking about this in tomorrow's live because I think so many parents quietly feel this way. I'd love you to join me. πŸ’š

Child's Play Activities

We live in a world that makes us feel like we need to fill every minute with something new.

But children don't always need another activity.

Sometimes they just need time.

Time to concentrate.
Time to repeat.
Time to figure things out for themselves.

Some of the best learning happens when we step back instead of stepping in.

Child's Play Activities

Every child has that thing.

The toy they always reach for.
The activity they never seem to get bored of.
The thing that completely captures their attention.

I'd love to know...

πŸ’š What does your child love playing with?

I'll be reading every comment, and you never knowβ€”it might inspire my next play idea!

Child's Play Activities

Sometimes children don't need a new activity.

They need another opportunity to explore the one they're already fascinated by.

That tiny path through the field reminded me of how children learn.

Every repetition strengthens the pathway a little more.

Child's Play Activities

"Ayla in a box" is what Ayla said as she sat in the box.

At the time I laughed.

Now I realise she was exploring inside and outside spaces. Children often show us exactly what they're interested in... ...if we slow down enough to watch. Has your child ever squeezed themselves into a tiny space?

Child's Play Activities

Before you head to Pinterest for the 147th time... πŸ‘€

Ask yourself:

What is my child trying to learn right now?

Children usually tell us through the play they come back to again and again.

Once we understand the why, choosing the what becomes much easier.

✨ That's exactly how I create my personalised play plansβ€”around your child's interests, not just their age.

Child's Play Activities

I used to think she was stuck.

Ayla could spend ages pouring water from one container to another.

The same cups.

The same bucket.

The same activity.

Over and over again.

At the time, I wondered why she didn't want to move on to something new.

What I understand now is that she wasn't stuck.

She was working something out.

Children who love pouring are often exploring:

πŸ’§ movement

πŸ’§ filling and emptying

πŸ’§ volume and capacity

πŸ’§ cause and effect

Sometimes the behaviours that look repetitive tell us the most about what our children are learning.

Does your child have an activity they always come back to?
