Benin History

Ero N’Urubi – Chief Izedomwen Ero,
An Edo noble and one of the foremost Edion (Uzama N'Ihinron) since the foundation of the Benin Monarchy under the Ogiso Dynasty. The Ero, alongside the Oliha, Edohen, and Eholo Nire, formed the Edion Nene, the original four elders who played a pivotal role in governance and the preservation of Benin’s early political traditions.

Benin History

CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER OF EVENTS IN HISTORY IS MOST RELEVANT TO NOMENCLATURE.

By Dr. Paul Osa Igbineweka

Some have postulated that "Igbo" nomenclature was of antiquity. How can the 19th century nomenclature be an antiquity over people that existed by other nomenclature before the 19th century?

The name "Igbo" was never of antiquity. They existed in the ancient times by their different ethnic locations as Mbaise, Orlu, Okigwe, Udi and others in a segmentary system. Which till today had metamorphosed into autonomous communities.

They never had a central monarchical structure.

The name "Igbo" is an Ẹdo-Idu word for one who intrude or enter a place uninvited: "ọ gbi igbo la emwa" He entered uninvited. When the Idu people were asked of the neighbours in their midst by others and foreigners, they were referred to as "emwa ni gbi igbo rre" The people now referred to as "Igbo" enter places with dexterity, it was never a name to ridicule people, but their nature of integration.

The Igbos are the most integrating people everywhere. But they hardly give lands to others to also integrate in their own lands because of their land tenure system of sharing lands to family by extension in their generations. Hence, by another Idu-Edo word is "igbọn" for strangers who never adhere to the rules and regulations of the host communities.

Before the 19th century they were not having the name "Igbo" in historical nomenclature.

The names that ancient people had were either given by neighbours or themselves. Hence, The Ika people called Benin people "Oyin'Idu", Urhobo refer to the Benin people as "Aka" as linked to the Aka a son of Idu, from whom the Akkarai kingdoms came to existence east of Igodomigodo (which were the Ika to Ukwanni peoples).

Itsekiri refer to the Benin people as "Ubini" while the Onitsha of Benin extraction were called "Onitsha Ado N'Idu" some refer to Benin Ẹdo people as "Ado"

The name "Igbo" can be used in Ẹdo-Idu language to anyone who entered a place, interfered into a matter as "ọ gbi igbo la ẹmwẹ na.

When we use latter words to explain people's history, we lost it's Original history. So narrating history by the 19th century nomenclature does not truly capture the contemporary culture of when that history actually existed. For example, there was Oyo before the name Yoruba, but narrating Oduduwa or Oranmiyan history by the name Yoruba is an aberration. Because they existed when Yoruba as a name was not in existence.

The word "Eze" is a shared meaning in our history. In Ẹdo-Idu "Eze nọ zuwa" "Ezọmọ" "Eze-ọti" as "Ezọti" from "Eze-ọtiti" (Eze is famous) from where we have the name Ọba Ezọti " and the name behind the street of Oba palace in Benin. The lineage of Lavbieze were of the Ika or Agbọn/Agbor People who had chieftaincy title in the Palace of Benin.

The Benin City for example became known as Benin from Ubini by their bilateral trade with the Portuguese, which was never in existence during the time of Igodomigodo, so when Benin is referred to as ancient city, when was the actual ancient began, it started from the period of the Ogiso dynasty. Therefore, narrating history to attract fame does not have to be narrated by historical dishonesty.

Using modern or recent name in history to narrate ancient history, it should avoid ascribing events to recent names when the events were never contemporary of the times of the latest nomenclature. And so be stated along or inferred. For example Oranmiyan came to Igodomigodo (now Benin).

People were born when we had Midwest, some when it changed to Bendel, and some now in Ẹdo or Delta. Someone born in the 60s is saying he was born in either Ẹdo or Delta State, then when asked of the date you discovered he was born in Midwest (now Ẹdo or Delta). However, former nomenclature remains valid in historical narrative.

When was "Igbo name" a name of antiquity? If I say there was Nigeria before 1914, you already knew I am starting from a wrong premise. Some can hardly understand because they have already been brainwashed with fabricated history. To promote the tribal nomenclature of the British distortion of their traditional history.

The original historical perspective of the indigenous people of the entities that later became Nigeria had been removed from the school curriculum deliberately to destroy them and impose on us the British distorted history of the people. For example Igbo and Yoruba or Hausa /Fulani have been described as a Tribe. Is that true? The people are not tribe, but Nations, just as the Bible has Israel as a nation with twelve tribes.

So when you hear "Igbo" tribe, Yoruba tribe, nothing can be further from the truth than to deceive people not to see themselves as a Nation, but as a tribe. For example, Ebonyi is a tribe in Igbo speaking area, Egba is a tribe in Yoruba speaking area. But using generative language to reconstruct a people by the ideas of colonialism is an aberration. If you tell either Igbo or Yoruba today that they are not tribes, they would feel you are insulting them, when in fact, the tribe they are claiming is an insult over them as a people or nation.

Frankly, is Igbo a name of antiquity older than the people of Southeast that had ancient names older than "Igbo" nomenclature? Their problem is the parochial mindset of promoting the 19th century nomenclature above the ancient nomenclature by which people existed in chronological events of history. Their posts always start on a wrong premise of defining a people that existed before the 19th century nomenclature with the 19th century nomenclature.

For instance you can only know names of your forebears up to the eight generations at most, beyond that you need to research to know who were your forebears before the eighth older generations that never existed with the 19th century nomenclature. Therefore, the chronological order of events in history has to apply accordingly.

THE ANCIENT BENIN SALT CELLAR
The Benin Salt Cellar Ivory, is one of Africa Ivory Masterpieces.
The precision, Craft and Story, the carvers are telling with the masterpiece.
According to an oral account, it was carved by the igbesamwan guild of carvers during the reign of Oba Orhogbua after he had successfully defeated the Olague and took the cooking salt in his possession. Getting to Benin, he ordered the igbesamwan carvers to make a storage for him to keep the white cooking treasure.
