For International Women's Day, I thought I'd look back at one of the trailblazers in Motorsport - Pat Moss.

Driving from the 1950s through to the mid 1970s, Pat Moss-Carlsson was one of the most successful female racing drivers and an inspiration to those who came after her. Moss initially found fame as a celebrated show jumper, winning the 1945 Windsor Cup horse trials alongside her brother Stirling, who would go on to have an exceptionally successful racing career himself. Pat had been taught to drive at the age of 11 by Stirling, himself just aged 16, and she started driving in club rallies when she turned 18.

From horses to horsepower

Whilst Standard-Triumph refused her funding in 1955, a more astute MG Cars would offer her expenses and a works MG TF 1500, beginning a very successful partnership with the British Motor Corporation. 1958 was her breakout year, claiming 4th place at the British RAC Rally in a Morris Minor, and another 4th place at Belgium's Liége-Rome-Liége Rally in an Austin Healey 100/6. Moss would also win the first of her record 5 European Ladies’ Rally Championships, driving a variety of BMC cars.

The first of many for the Mini

Not content to just enter the European Ladies’ Rallies, Moss claimed three outright rally wins and seven podiums rallying against men, making her one of the most successful female racing drivers of all time. Her most significant result may have been winning the Dutch Tulip Rally alongside co-driver Ann Wisdom-Riley in the Morris Mini Cooper, the first overall rally win for the car. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of ‘Mossie’ and ‘Wizz’ winning the 2,500km rally, Mini released the Pat Moss Edition of the new Mini in 2022.

Becoming ‘Mrs Saab’

In 1963, Moss married fellow rally driver, Swede Erik Carlsson, who was nicknamed ‘Mr Saab’ due to his career long association with the Swedish brand. Moss had been driving for Ford who tried to sign Karl, but instead Pat switched to Saab to partner her new husband, with whom she went on to write the book The Art and Technique of Driving. In 1969, Moss and Carlsson had a daughter, Susan, who would follow in her mother’s footsteps by going on to be a successful showjumper herself.

As well as driving Standard-Triumph and BMC brands, Moss-Carlsson also rallied for Ford, Saab, Lancia, Renault, Alpine, and Toyota. She was a remarkable woman and racing driver who undoubtedly blazed a trail for future generations of female racing drivers, such as Michele Mouton, Lella Lombardi, Desire Wilson, and Jamie Chadwick.

Reference pictures of the Jaguar XJS TWR European Touring car for the 1/24 Hasegawa Model kit I'm building.

I've noticed things like the wheels are not chrome, unlike how they are in the kit. Just like the 1/43 version I built, I'm using Tamiya XF26 dark green for the bodywork. As it's flat, I'll need to give it a clear coat before adding decals.

To go with my Oh-Kay Plumbing van from 'Home Alone' I was sent these fantastic Kevin, Harry and Marv resin models from Iceman Collections
I'm really looking forward to painting them to go with the model I built. They are in the right scale to match the 1/25 van so now it's up to me to get the right colours!

29th January 1886 was the date of the patent for Karl Benz's Patent Motorwagen, making today effectively the 140th birthday of the Motorcar. You can see here the 1/24 model I built a few years ago and the patent itself.

So Yasukichi Yanamoto himself, builder of the original Opera Performance S2000, watched my replica build on YouTube and liked it on Instagram as well! I'm pretty shocked and deeply humbled by his praise.

Opera Performance Honda S2000 in 1/24 scale based on the Tamiya model kit.
Custom decals were printed by myself, I also added Ings wing, race seat, belts, bonnet clips, and racing steering wheel.

I've also been working hard on the Williams FW14B build - the model is now finished and I'm editing the video - I ended up with almost 2 hours of footage to trim down though. Hopefully it will be finished for next Monday though.
