Some lessons this year cut deep - trust, authenticity, and the weight of showing up for community.
It hasnāt been easy. Not everyone in your circle is truly for you. But protecting your peace, staying authentic, and showing up anyway? Thatās the work that lasts.
Today weāre celebrating every curl, coil, kink and crown. The beauty, the history, the creativity - all of it. Our hair tells stories of survival, migration, joy, innovation, and style thatās been passed from generation to generation.
But celebration also means action. Too many of us still face discrimination and pressure to conform.
Over 500 people have already signed our petition to ban hair discrimination in the north east and Cumbria but we need even more voices to make it happen.
Celebrate with us. Sign the petition. Protect our hair.
Weāre calling this the #TribeTesi Issue with so much gratitude šš¾

As I reflect on the journey of Tribe Tesi, some pieces stand out for the way they capture the essence of our community and values. One such piece is āUnveiling the Essence of Being an African Womanā. Resharing this blog feels important because it reminds us of the beauty, strength, and resilience inherent in African womanhood - a celebration of heritage, identity, and the power of community that continues to inspire us today.
Even years later, the themes of empowerment, sisterhood, and cultural pride remain as relevant as ever. Revisiting this blog is a chance to honour the women who shape our lives, challenge societal expectations, and lead with grace and courage. Itās a reminder that our roots and stories carry lessons, inspiration, and strength for the present and future.
This guest post by Ngozi Lyn Cole is not just a story, itās a moment of awakening, strength, and self-truth.
Itās the kind of writing that tugs at something deep and honest inside you. From navigating identity in a new land to reclaiming her voice through her name, Ngoziās journey is a bold reminder of how our stories shape who we become. A must-read.
Dinner at Saray Turkish Grill House was nothing short of a feast - meat galore and flavours that took centre stage. Itās the kind of place you leave feeling full, happy, and already planning your next visit.
It also wouldnāt be a bad shout for a future Nia Nights - the food, the vibe, the generosity of it all. It just fits.
One to keep in mind⦠and if you havenāt heard about Nia Nights yet, youāre in for something special ⤵ļø
āWeāre still treated unfairly because of our hair.ā
Dr Claire Ogah, Steph Edusei, Georgia May, Ngozi Cole and Salha Kaitesi. These are just some of the Black and mixed-race women in the North East courageously calling for change - demanding that hair-based discrimination be made explicitly unlawful.
From classrooms to boardrooms, our natural and protective hairstyles are policed, judged and touched without consent. Itās not just frustrating, itās dehumanising. And itās been happening for far too long.
This isnāt just about hair. Itās about dignity, identity and belonging.
Special thanks to Maria at The Pink Shop Unisex Salon for letting us use her har salon for filming and Pamela Tickell and the BBC for helping amplify our voices - from BBC Radio, to Look North, to this online feature.
The Black History Month photoshoot happened yesterday, and what a beautiful, bold, and brilliant bunch we had. Huge thank you to Claire, Stephany, Tinu, Ola, Mary, Steph and Dimije for showing up, standing tall, and embracing the moment with so much intention. You truly brought the vision to life.
This shoot wasnāt just about photos, it was about taking up space, proudly and unapologetically. It was about representation, joy, and honouring the beauty of Afro-textured hair in all its forms.
The portraits captured will be unveiled on the 4th of October during āŖ@teakisiā¬ās Elevate Symposium. Itās something youāll want to see.
A special thank you as well to City Tavern for their warm hospitality; they looked after us so well and gave our group the perfect space to feel comfortable, seen and celebrated.
We invite you to be part of our first She Rises event. Itās a space for honest dialogue, deep connection, and renewed purpose. Whether you're leading teams, building something new, or simply figuring out whatās next, thereās a place for you here.
If you're ready to reflect, be challenged, and grow alongside other Black women and women of colour who are doing the same, we invite you to join us.
