Punch doesn't weigh much. He's barely a baby. But for months he's been carrying something enormous, something commonplace: loneliness.
This little Japanese macaque, born on July 26, 2025, was rejected by his mother shortly after coming into the world.
Without maternal warmth and without a group to protect him, Punch was left in the care of the keepers at the Ichikawa Zoo and Botanical Garden in Chiba Prefecture.
There, amid constant care, bottle feedings, and veterinary supervision, something unexpected happened. Punch clung to a stuffed animal as if it were his last certainty.
Caretakers explain that these objects function as "comfort objects," just as human babies are soothed by a blanket or a toy.
Punch didn't just need food: he needed comfort.
But... the story of #Punch hasn't stopped at viral cuteness.
In recent weeks, his life has taken a hopeful turn.
Accoraing to international media reports, runch nas begun interacting with other monkeys. And most significantly, an adult in the troop has offered him his first grooming session, the act of grooming that, in the primate world, signifies acceptance, care, and belonging. It's a small gesture, but in their language, it says it all... it seems Punch is starting to stop being alone
This somewhat atypical story reminds us that comfort is not exclusive to humans. That fear, the need for affection, and the desire to belong are universal.
And that, sometimes, the end is not a goodbye to the stuffed animal but the beginning of a real hug.
