South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an "emergency martial law" in a surprise late-night address, citing the need to safeguard constitutional order amid tensions with the opposition.
Yoon accused opposition parties of paralyzing government processes, sympathizing with North Korea.
He said that the recent political tensions undermined South Korea's democracy.
"I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order," Yoon said.
However, he did not specify the measures to be implemented under martial law.
The declaration follows recent moves by the opposition Democratic Party, including efforts to impeach top prosecutors and rejecting key proposals, including the national budget.

She also led the planting of 50 native coffee tree in the same area. Then she proceeded the Isabela City Civic Center, where she distributed OVP gift packs to around 1000 farmers, vendors and fisherfolk. Joining her was Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djallia Turabin Hataman.
