The Whitby Photographer

Welcome to The Whitby Photographer.

This channel documents life in and around Whitby the North Yorkshire Moors, coast, sea, the weather, the people, and the moments that quietly matter.

You’ll find storm footage, snow, tides, fishing boats, coastal drives, village life, and the occasional unexpected story that turns up when a camera is left to observe rather than interfere. Nothing is staged, exaggerated, or forced.

I’m a Whitby-based photographer - videographer, filming the town and surrounding countryside as it actually is. Some videos are calm, some are wild, others quietly funny.

Many films are narrated by Gary Bender, offering commentary, perspective, and the occasional raised eyebrow at modern life. Others are left to breathe with natural sound and atmosphere.

If you enjoy honest storytelling, strong visuals, and films that feel real you’re in the right place.

New videos added regularly. Thanks for watching and supporting independent local filmmaking.

A quick note about how I work

I’ve had a few phone calls and messages recently about prints and collections, so just to keep things clear:

I don’t take phone calls for photography enquiries, and I don’t offer prints, collections, or home visits.

Everything I offer is digital download only through my shop.

That setup is intentional. I’ve built things this way to keep the process simple and to manage my time and mental wellbeing, so I can stay focused on actually getting out and taking photographs.

If you’d like something, just drop me a message and I’ll happily point you to what’s available online.

Thanks for understanding.

It was free. You missed it. Life moves on.

And yes… there will be another free one.

You just need to be quicker next time.

That’s it, the free Whitby image has now been taken down.

Just over 300 downloads in the end, which is a decent effort all round.

If you missed it, you can still get both the 199 Steps and Lighthouse images together for £5 as high resolution downloads to print yourself. Just say Yes Please below and I'll point you in the right direction.

I’ll have another free one up before long.

Policing Whitby.

For as long as any of us can remember, Whitby’s young people have had the freedom of their own town. Meeting friends, hanging about, lighting the odd barbecue, doing what young people have always done.

And compared to most places, they’re hardly a problem. There’s very little violence, no knife crime, and far less trouble than you’d see in bigger towns. In most cases, they’re just kids being kids.

But lately it feels like that’s being treated as an issue.

Last year there was a council consultation, talk of labelling barbecues as anti social behaviour, and now we seem to have police and fire turning up to deal with gatherings on Tate Hill beach as if something serious is going on.

Yes, there’s sometimes a bit of litter. But that’s a small, manageable problem. It doesn’t need turning into a full blown operation ran by Sherlock Holmes’s himself.

What sits a bit uneasy with me is this…

When my mum, nearly 90 at the time, was burgled, the response was slow and nothing really came of it. Yet there seems to be time to photograph the aftermath of a campfire and present it like a major success story.

We’re in a time where there’s less money, fewer youth services, and not much for young people to do. Taking away the few simple freedoms they have left doesn’t feel like the answer.

There are already laws in place to deal with real problems. If something genuinely gets out of hand, deal with it. But turning up to barbecues and presenting it as policing at its finest doesn’t sit right.

And one final thought…

If we’re going to see this level of attention on young people having a barbecue on Tate Hill, then people will quite rightly expect to see the same level of presence and force on New Year’s Eve.

Fair is Fair.
