Can Hydrogen Therapy Support Cancer Care? New Clinical Insights
A clinical study published in Medical Gas Research (2020) evaluated the potential application of molecular hydrogen (H₂) inhalation in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study enrolled 58 patients, including groups receiving standard therapies such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, either alone or in combination with hydrogen inhalation. The findings indicated that hydrogen therapy was associated with a prolongation of progression-free survival (PFS), increasing from approximately 4.4 months in the control group to between 7.9 and 10.1 months in hydrogen-treated groups, with the greatest benefit observed when used alongside conventional treatments. In addition, hydrogen inhalation was linked to a reduction in the incidence and severity of treatment-related adverse events, including hematological toxicities, gastrointestinal symptoms, and inflammatory complications, as well as improvements in pulmonary symptoms such as dyspnea and cough. These effects are proposed to be mediated by the selective antioxidative properties of molecular hydrogen, particularly its capacity to modulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and attenuate inflammatory pathways. While these findings are encouraging, the study is limited by its sample size and design, and further large-scale, controlled clinical trials are required to confirm efficacy and better define its role in clinical practice. Overall, molecular hydrogen represents a promising adjunctive approach in oncology, particularly in the context of supportive care and symptom management.
