- The British would deal a decisive blow to the Zulu at Ulundi, where 4,000 redcoats would form a mass square and utterly defeat the 15,000 strong Zulu force. It was one of the first uses of Gatling guns by the British army.
- It must have been close at one point however, as Lord Chelmsford is quoted screaming to the men in distress - "Fire faster, can't you men fire faster!"
- As the Zulu army broke, the square opened and British heavy lancers were released.
“The soldiers in the center of the camp poured volley after volley into the impi, men all around me were falling to the ground; We started to crouch down and dare not advance”
Zulu account - "There were a group of them fighting back to back like a fence, I was afraid to attack them as they were now using their guns as clubs. They put down many (warriors) of the uVe regiment. I watched, waiting to strike, but eventually they were overwhelmed."

When Lord Chelmsford returned to Isandlwana it was dark. He ordered the men to sleep just outside the camp and they were to move off before the sun came up. He feared the site of what had happened would demoralize the men. However, as the rear of the column were moving off the sun was rising and what those men saw would haunt them forever, friends and comrades lying all around where they had slept. Some even realizing they had used the bodies as pillows.
