From the beginning of software development, I expected the software to be able to handle paintings of three feet by six feet, and I clearly set this as a goal, because "three-by-six-foot paintings" are the large painting sizes commonly used in Chinese ink art. If the software can handle this area, it will pass my test. After several years of improvements in speed and operation, I finally completed my first single, three feet by six feet digital ink painting, eliminating the need to combine two or four ink paintings together to form a double or quadruple painting as in the past. To finish this work, i used a more powerful computer. CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) w7-3465X, RAM: 64GB
Pure ink software 1.5
2025 is the fifth anniversary of Pure ink software since it launched. As the new year starts, we launch the latest version of 1.5 today. The new version focus more on the enhancement of the brush:
1. 20 Easy Brushes are released in one go. Most of the settings of the brush are preset. After selection, the preset effect can be drawn directly, from long and short dry wipe, wet paint with different wetness, broken brush, wet spot, thin line, brush with rich ink, brush with litter ink, to one-brush-two-colors, users can draw the effect they want without having to make detailed settings for the brush. This gives significant help to users with less experience in ink painting.
2. Two types of pens, the Long-hair Brush and the Short-hair Brush, are launched. In the software, Long-hair Brush is better for drawing, and Short-hair Brush is better for writing.
3. A Brush panel is added, through which the brush can be adjusted in detail. The Brush Release determines how quickly the brush is lifted from the paper. Stabilizer controls how smooth the lines are. Anti-alias is a function that makes the edges of lines appear sharp or smooth.
4. Washable Sketch is introduced. You can take it to draft directly on the paper in software. Users can draft first and then paint, and the sketches can then be easily washed away with paint.
5. The possible size of brush is lowered, and fine lines with a width of 1 pixel can be drawn. With the function of anti-alias, the quality of fine lines can be more effectively increased.
6. The absorption of ink by paper will produce uneven mist marks on the paper. The new version can simulate this characteristic and increase the realism of painting.
7. Optimized the simulation effect of brush on writing
8. The effect of Color Flusher has been improved, which can more effectively flush the pigment on the paper to produce variable effects. Even the pigment that has been dried for a long time can be flushed easily.
9. The possible print size that the software supported further increases to 30cm x 60cm (I.e. 3 feets x 6 feets) if sufficient memory is provided (16GB or above). This is already the standard size of large painting used in ink art media, making the software more suitable for real-life applications.
Industrialization of ink art
How to industrialize ink art and bring this culture out of museums and into ordinary public life? This requires a platform that can integrate ink art and digital production. The Lanting system in Pure ink software uses artificial intelligence technology to generate Zhao Mengfu's running script. We use the software as a platform to directly present calligraphy art into digital images for easy design, production and repeated modifications. This semester, we take the public library’s 2025 reading club as a theme and teach design students to use Lanting A.I. calligraphy to create A2 size (42cm x 60cm) posters for promotional activities, with clear fonts and distinctive cultural features. The art of calligraphy should not be locked away in museums, but can be used in daily life. The software, together with the Lanting A.I. system is fully open to the public without reservation.

[Outstanding works by Pure ink Software] (batch 1 / 3)
By the end of every year, students will submit their digital paintings done by Pure ink software. This is the moment to evaluate the software in a year. The quality of the works this year is better than the ones in last year and this surprised me. This is not just because of the potential of students, but also because of the improvement of software which allows them to express their potential.
To evaluate the software, the key is not to see how good I can create a work by using it, but to see how good the other users can create their own works by using it.
Here comes the first four paintings.
After several years of upgrading, Pure ink freeware is already capable of processing a digital painting with size of 2 feet x 4 feet which is a standard size used in Chinese ink art. The work can be further outputted and printed on Xuan paper (rice paper). By using this technique, I recently finished a 2-in-1 painting, a new work with a size of 4 feet x 4 feet.

Media: Pure ink, Adobe Illustrator, Lanting A.I., Xuan paper
The work was painted entirely by a mouse. For the collage, with the help of the new function of Transfer in Pure ink, the architectural elements were drawn by Adobe Illustrator first, then, together with other possible collage elements, are integrated with the painting via this function.
I particularly want to introduce the calligraphy on the top right hand corner of the work. They are generated by the Lanting A.I. in Pure ink based on the computer characters inputted by me. For a long time, I have not been skillful enough to write calligraphy. In the past, I always wanted to write poems on my ink paintings but never able to do so. Now, by using this A.I. technology, I can eventually do what a scholar painting requires by integrating poem, calligraphy, and painting together. This is such an unbelievable approach that I never expected 20 years ago. The poem is translated like this:
“The stars move and the moon sets,
Dazzling like a dream.
Once the spaceship returns,
So many springs and autumns pass.
The hairs become grass on tomb,
The mountains are covered with hundreds of years of frost.
Now that you arrive the Heavenly Palace,
No more sadness,
A line of tears in heaven,
The rivers in the world will flow endlessly for thousands of lifetimes.
After returning from a trip to space by a spaceship at the speed of light, I was moved and wrote this poem to record.”
The Lanting AI calligraphy system learns from the origin. It took the copies of the original works of Zhao Mengfu (1254 - 1322), a calligraphy master in the Yuan Dynasty, as learning materials. This makes it different from the computer calligraphy fonts that use TTF as the format and designed by font designers based on their interpretations on the calligraphy. With the inherent advantage of AI in generating fine images, Lanting system can accurately reproduce the charm of Zhao's running script, which is different from the computer fonts of calligraphy on the market that also target Zhao Mengfu's running script.
Lanting is the world's first practical AI model of Chinese calligraphy, used directly in Pure ink painting freeware.
[The applications of Lanting AI of Calligraphy] [蘭亭AI書法系統應用]
In addition to being used for digital art creation, Lanting AI can also directly apply Chinese calligraphy to commercial design with the help of the high-resolution output of Pure ink software. Each calligraphy character can be output into an image with a printing area of up to 8cm x 8cm. By importing such images into the digital files of the design product, firstly, it avoids the difficulty of getting the needed calligraphy characters from reality, and secondly, it avoids the trouble of converting paper media into digital format. These make the entire process easy to be done by anyone. The first application example of Lanting AI is a leather handbag with Zhao Mengfu running calligraphy on it. "Having shoulders, having waist", "My home field". 蘭亭AI除了可用於數碼藝術創作外，憑著大千水墨軟件高解像度輸出之便，更可直接將中國書法應用於商品設計之中，每個書法字可輸出成打印面積最多8cm x 8cm 的圖片，再直接匯入設計檔案內使用，一則免卻要源頭尋找書法字的困難，二則免卻由紙本媒介轉數碼格式的麻煩，全程DIY操作。 蘭亭AI首個應用例子，皮革手提包，配趙孟頫行書體字，「有膊頭有腰骨」，挺直做人直漢子，一切「我主場」。
[How to do tracing by Pure ink freeware] [如何用大千水墨軟件(Pure ink)做臨摹]
Tracing is a special approach in the learning of Chinese art and it demonstrates the importance of inheritance in Chinese art. Apart from the Lanting AI system, the new version of the Pure ink freeware also has expanded layer functions, making it finally capable of tracing Zhao Mengfu's running script or ancient paintings. The method is very simple. First, start the Lanting system in the software. After typing the calligraphy characters you want to trace, the characters will exist in the form of layers. Lower the opacity of the relevant layers, and then adjust the brush to a state suitable for writing calligraphy (figure 2) , you can then trace the calligraphy on the paper (Figure 1). In the same way, when tracing a painting, after importing the photo of the painting into the software, you can process the painting layers by referring to the method of processing calligraphy characters. The example in the picture below and in the introductory video is to use software to trace Huang Gongwang's (1269-1354) Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (figure 3 and 4).

從開發軟件之初，已期望軟件能處理三呎乘六尺大小的畫作，並明確將此定為目標，因為“三六尺畫”是水墨藝術常用的大畫尺寸，能夠應付這個面積，軟件才算過我的關。軟件經過幾年來在速度及操作等方面的改進，我終於完成首張單一的、三呎乘六呎的電繪水墨畫，無需像過往必須透過兩張或四張水墨畫拼成雙拼或四拼而成大畫。這次創作是用上了一部配置較強的電腦， CPU： Intel(R) Xeon(R) w7-3465X ，RAM： 64GB。

2025年是大千水墨軟件發佈5周年，新年伊始，軟件再跨一步，今天推出新的1.5版本。新版本聚焦狼毫筆的改良：
1. 一口氣推出20支簡易狼毫筆，預設了毛筆的大部分設定，選取後直接繪出預設的效果，從長短乾擦，不同程度的濕染，碎筆，濕點，幼線，飽墨，渴筆，到一筆雙色，用家無須再為狼毫筆做詳細設定已可畫出心中效果，對水墨媒介較少經驗的用家有顯著幫助。
2. 推出長鋒狼毫及短鋒狼毫兩種筆。在軟件內長鋒狼毫較宜繪畫，短鋒狼毫較宜書寫。
3. 增設狼毫筆調校面板，透過面板可以專門對狼毫筆進行細緻調校。 提筆節奏決定狼毫筆從紙上提起的速度。穩定器控制線條的順滑程度。柔邊處理是一個能讓線條邊緣顯得銳利或柔順的功能。
4. 增設可沖洗鉛筆，可直接在軟件內的宣紙及雲龍紙上起稿，用家可先起稿後下筆，鉛筆線條隨後可輕易被顏料沖洗掉。
5. 狼毫筆尺寸下限降低，可畫出只有1像素闊的幼線，如配合柔邊處理，可進一步增加幼線的質量。
6. 墨在紙上滲化會產生不均勻的霧狀痕跡， 新版本能夠模擬這個特性，增加作畫真實感。
7. 優化了狼毫筆在書寫上的模擬效果
8. 改良了顏料沖洗器的質素，可更顯注地沖洗紙上顏料產生多變效果，久乾了的顏料都較易被沖洗。
9. 軟件在具足夠記憶體的條件下(16GB或以上)能支援的打印尺寸進一步推升至 90cm X 120cm (即 3尺 x 6尺)， 這已是水墨媒介中常用的大尺寸畫面，令軟件更具實戰應用的價值。

軟件經過多年升級，如今已能夠成功單幅處理面積達兩尺乘四尺的畫面，應付到這種水墨創作常用的尺寸，並可輸出及打印到宣紙上。 利用軟件的這個能力，我剛完成了四呎乘四呎的雙併畫新作。
題目： 天舟一朝還，人間幾許春秋
尺寸：120cmX120cm
媒介： 大千水墨軟件，Adobe Illustrator， 蘭亭AI書法，宣紙印刷
繪畫部分全部透過操作滑鼠完成。併貼部分則有賴軟件提供的移印新功能，終於可做到先採用illustrator軟件繪畫建築物， 再透過此項功能將建築等併貼素村滲染進水墨畫中。
我尤其想介紹一下畫作右上方的題字。 這些書法字體是由軟件內的蘭亭AI系統依照我輸入到軟件去的電腦字生成的。其實我的書法素來真是比普通更普通，還記得當初我跟隨李潤桓老師學習山水畫時，他跟我說：“你的畫還可以，但書法跟不上，作畫能力跟書法能力要匹配才可以。” 過往我想為自己每一張畫度身編寫一首詩詞但從來下不了筆。如今我透過這個AI書法系統，終於在今天，以一種極為奇特的、一種當日的李潤桓老師以及我兩人做夢都沒有想過的方法，做到了詩書畫合一這個文人畫的要求了，回望當日，老師說那番話竟已是24年前的事了。 畫作上的題字如下：
星移月沉，
晃晃如夢幻。
天舟一朝還，
人間幾許春秋。
雲鬢堪成墓草，
山披百年霜。
既扺天宮，
悲傷莫再，
天界一行淚，
人間江水千生千世流不盡。
乘光速飛船流連太虚歸還有感寫此詩畫以作記

[如何用大千水墨軟件(Pure ink)做臨摹]
Tracing is a special approach in the learning of Chinese art and it demonstrates the importance of inheritance in Chinese art. Apart from the Lanting AI system, the new version of the Pure ink freeware also has expanded layer functions, making it finally capable of tracing Zhao Mengfu's running script or ancient paintings. The method is very simple. First, start the Lanting system in the software. After typing the calligraphy characters you want to trace, the characters will exist in the form of layers. Lower the opacity of the relevant layers, and then adjust the brush to a state suitable for writing calligraphy (figure 2) , you can then trace the calligraphy on the paper (Figure 1). In the same way, when tracing a painting, after importing the photo of the painting into the software, you can process the painting layers by referring to the method of processing calligraphy characters. The example in the picture below and in the introductory video is to use software to trace Huang Gongwang's (1269-1354) Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (figure 3 and 4).
臨摹是中國藝術特有的一種學習方式，體驗了中國藝術對承傳的重視。新版本的大千水墨軟件除了配備蘭亭AI系統外，亦擴展了圖層功能，令軟件終於具備臨摹趙孟頫行書或者古畫的能力。做法十分簡單，首先在軟件內啟動蘭亭系統，打出欲臨摹的書法字後，字體以圖層形式存在，將相關圖層的透明度調低，然後把毛筆調節至適合書寫書法的狀態(圖2)，就可以在畫纸上依字臨摹(圖1)。 同理， 臨摹畫作時，把畫作照片匯入軟件後， 參考處理書法字的方式處理畫作圖層即可。 下圖及介紹影片內的例子是利用軟件臨摹黃公望(元朝)的富春山居圖(圖3, 4)。
