Take a look at the amazing artwork from some of my students!

I love seeing them all together like this because you can see how different everyoneโ€™s style is, even though they all followed the same tutorial ๐Ÿ˜Š

This is my most popular tutorial in the KR Fine Art Academy because itโ€™s a full-length, real-time tutorial with an in-depth explanation of how to use pastel pencils!

There are a lot of helpful tips in this tutorial to help you get started with pastel pencils!

What's the best piece of advice you've received about creating art?
Was there something specific that you learned when you started your art journey that was so helpful it stuck with you until now?
I'd love to hear from you and inspire each other!

We used to have a pet macaw named "Peaches" when I was growing up, so I have drawn a lot of macaws over the years!
I didn't realise how many until I was looking through old pictures of my artwork!

I wish we had resources like YouTube when I was younger because I would have progressed so much faster if I were able to learn from others who were creating realistic artwork in a style that I liked. I tried one in-person art lesson and hated it because the instructor drew all over my work to "help"

I never took another lesson again and taught myself how to draw instead

I sound like I'm older than I am - we had the internet when we were younger, but we didn't have good quality online art tutorials and/or YouTube like we have today!

I'm so grateful that I am able to help others on their artistic journey through online tutorials!

I never used to consider art as a career choice when I was younger, but I realised when I was 22 that I could make a living by teaching online, so I started a YouTube channel, and I haven't looked back since!

Today, my KR Fine Art Academy allows me to help so many people all over the world, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else with my life ๐Ÿ˜Š

When did you start drawing?
Did you have lessons - and did you have a similar experience to me where you really disliked them?

------------
The most recent drawing was pastel on Pastelmat, the reference from Pixabay.
The rest of the drawings were from my own photos or real life and were coloured pencil or acrylic piece

Was anyone else the artistic kid in school?
This brings back memories ๐Ÿ˜‚
I came up with any excuse to draw on my school work or create really colourful projects when they weren't required (I spent so much time cutting up coloured paper and adding drawings to everything)
I remember comments in my school reports about my really colourful maths homework, or the unnecessary drawings on a science project - but they were all positive comments about it so I kept doing it!

2017 Artwork Throwback!
(scroll across to see a better photo of the artwork)

Sometimes I look back at my artwork and notice all the things that I could have done differently... but not with this guy!

I actually loved this pastel painting when I completed it, just as much as I do now, which is odd for me!

I guess it's a positive to be so self-critical though...

You can learn and grow as an artist if you know what mistakes you made and how to improve them for further projects

Are you critical of your older artwork as well?

Some of you may know that Iโ€™ve had a bit of a break from art (not by choice) because of health issues and Iโ€™ve recently got back into drawing again. I had a lot of struggles including self-doubt, lack of confidence, and not knowing where to begin. I wanted to share some of my tips for getting back into art after a break so you donโ€™t have to make the same mistakes I did!

2017 Artwork Throwback!

This was the second ever pastel portrait I created and it was for my mum on Mother's Day :)
This is still one of my favourite portraits!

Molly is a Standard poodle with "parti" colouring so she's very interesting looking... we've been asked if she's an alpaca more than once ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿ˜‚
If you scroll across, you can see my sister with the real Molly and my mum when she received the artwork on Motherโ€™s Day!

What breed of dog do you have? Any other poodle mums out there?

One of the questions I am asked regularly is;
โ€What other cheaper brand of (insert art supply here) do you recommend for a beginner?โ€
This recent video answers your question and gives you alternatives if you have a budget or are worried about spending too much money when you just want to try out a new supply!

2019 Artwork Throwback!

This was an oil painting and I love how it turned out, but I actually don't get a lot of time to work with oils or acrylics with YouTube and the Academy (where I mainly focus on dry mediums)!

But I do hope to learn more about oils/acrylics and practice enough to be able to teach oils confidently in the future sometime!

Between pastels, coloured pencils, graphite, charcoal, watercolour pencils and watercolour... I find it hard to fit in practice haha ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜‚

Do you work in multiple mediums as well?

What is your favourite?

I just wanted to share a little technique that I love doing with Pan Pastels!

I really wanted to bring more attention to the face and his proud, stern expression so I softened some areas of the bird using Pan Pan pastels and a square edged Sofft knife tool to create painterly looking strokes!

I love that you can create a more painterly effect with Pans, in comparison to other types of pastels, and I use this technique quite often in my artwork to make it look a little more painterly and show a little more of my own artistic style!

Softening that large mass of feathers on his back, and creating more detail and contrast in the face area really helps bring that attention to the face ๐Ÿ˜Š

I used colours from the background to do this, as well as colours from throughout the bird itself to make it look like it was almost fading into the background.

Birds are my favourite subject to draw, especially interesting or "ugly" birds!
I came across this reference photo (which I've also attached so you can see), and there was something about it that was so interesting to me!

Do you like to draw "ugly" or interesting looking animals as well?
