To celebrate what would have been ‘The Crown Prince Of Reggae’ Dennis
Emmanuel Brown’s 68th birthday, Gorgon Records is shining the musical
spotlight on two overlooked treasures from the singer’s illustrious career. “I’m
Lost Without You” and “Light Your Fire”, backed with their respective dubs, have
been remastered from the original 1/4 tape and are now released on digital and
streaming platforms for the very 1st time.

In 1985, Lovers Rock still carried the swing at Blues parties from Brixton to
Birmingham, from St. Pauls to Peckham, and these two extended mixes are
aimed straight at devoted followers of the subgenre. As a true master of his
craft, Brown delivers his heartfelt lyrics atop The Aggrovators’ hedonistic riddims
in ne style. Riddims complete with sparkling synths, rolling basslines and lo-,
punchy drum machines, which become fully immersive on these stretched-out
Discomixes and dubs.

Dennis Brown, one of Jamaica’s most iconic artists, has left a lasting legacy of
timeless reggae classics during a prolific career spanning forty years. His
exquisitely soulful voice and exceptional songwriting talent saw him work with
the elite Jamaican producers such as Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee, Joe Gibbs, Vincent
‘Randy’ Chin, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, King Jammy, Gussie Clarke, Sly & Robbie,
Coxson Dodd and many more.

A major force in the development of reggae, Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee was at the helm
during the golden era of Jamaican music and helped pioneer the globalization of
the genre. The super producer scored hit after hit with legendary artists such as
King Tubby, Johnny Clarke, Max Romeo, U-Roy, Horace Andy, Delroy Wilson,
John Holt, Cornel Campbell, Slim Smith and Ken Boothe, to name just a few.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of deejay and producer Floyd Anthony Perch, known better as Papa Kojak.

Born in Kingston, Kojak started out originally under the name "Pretty Boy Floyd" where he deejayed for multiple sound systems in his area. He soon changed his name and look based on the main character of the TV series Kojak.

Kojak would go on to release multiple singles and albums for various producers, including Bunny "Striker" Lee. Kojak would do two albums for Bunny Lee as part of the duo Kojak & Liza (Liza being the stage name used for two different women who both performed with him.)

During the very early 80s, Kojak would set up a label sharing his stage name. This label had some success, with his track "Nice Up Jamaica" being successful and being endorsed by the Jamaican tourist board. Kojak's distinct sound helped lead the transition from the conscious lyrics of the 70's to the more formal lyrics that began to dominate Dancehall in the early 1980s.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Blessed Earthstrong to the man himself, the Hitmaker from Jamaica, Mr. Bunny " Striker" Lee!

Born in Greenwich Town Jamaica, Bunny Lee began his career as a reggae plugger for Duke Reid. His proximity to various producers soon led him to end up in the studios where he soon had his first hit production, Roy Shirley's "Music Field" in 1967. The next year, Bunny Lee would produce on of Jamaica's biggest tracks ever, Slim Smith's "My Conversation", which gave birth to one of Rocksteady and Reggae's most famous riddims.

During this time, Bunny Lee was regularly flying back and forth between Jamaica and England. Bunny Lee was instrumental in the creation of BOTH Trojan Records as well as PAMA records, both of which are stalwarts in early Reggae, especially in the U.K.

Bunny Lee would have his most influential period during the mid 1970s where he was producing tracks and albums for artist like Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke, John Holt, Hortense Ellis, Leroy Smart, Horace Andy, Barry Brown. During this time Bunny Lee also helped King Tubby get his studio up and running, and released some of King Tubby's original dub albums such as "Roots of Dub" and "Dub From the Roots." Both of these albums were some of the first Dub albums ever released.

Bunny Lee would continue to produce in the 80's and 90's but would slow down production during the mid 90s.

In 2008, Bunny Lee was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican Government

Bunny Lee passed away in 2020, but his immense legacy in the Reggae landscape will never leave us.

Blessed Earthstrong Eric Donaldson!

Born in Kent Village, just down the road from famous Bog Walk's Flat Bridge, Eric Donaldson is a legend in Jamaican music.

Born in Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica, Eric made his way to Kingston where he began recording for Coxson Dodd's Studio One label in 1964. For unknown reasons, these recordings were never released by Coxon Dodd. Following this, he joined the group "The West Indians" with Leslie Burke and Hector Brooks. The group has success in 1968, when their song "Right On Time" became a hit in Jamaica.

Following the group's success, Eric decided to perform as a solo act. In 1971, he had his biggest career hit "Cherry Oh Baby" for the Jamaican Festival Song Competition. This song was recorded by none other than Bunny "Striker" Lee, and is regarded as one of the biggest songs in the history of Jamaican music. Eric Donaldson would have additional Festival hits in 1977 with "Sweet Jamaica" and in 1978 with "Land Of My Birth."

The riddim from Cherry Oh Baby has been a popular riddim in Jamaican music, being used by many artists throughout the decades since the song's release.

Eric Donaldson currently lives in his hometown of Kent Village.
