Kind of crazy that Apple abandoned the easily accessible hard disk and battery in the unibody 15" Macbook Pro after less than a year.

I’ll be the first to say that Apple silicon is extremely impressive and represents the best performance per dollar value in tech… but the repairability is abysmal, and this is a consistent problem with tech companies.

@HungryManticore

Now you can't even upgrade the SSD. I am sick of modern disposable tech.

This laptop was from an era when all laptops had a removable battery, I think at some point apple realized they could get away with setting design trends, just look at how many laptops went to the "unibody shell" design instead of the frame + "access all parts from the keyboard size of the laptop body"

I have a 2008 macbook pro like that and I love that thing so much.

I have a feeling we're going to see a return of that design in 2027 with the new EU regulation about batteries.

Love Apple technology, but their anti consumer practices really suck

I never used apple products , abusly expensive , absurdly hard to repair. , cost a lot to repair

If you need to do a service or part replacement like once in a 6 or 7 years, it is okay to unscrew a 10 pentalobes. It is not a big deal

Removing batteries today is such a faff, they used to be SOOO easy to service, now these machines are rapidly becoming E-waste thanks to Windows 11

They kind of have to, to be fair, nothing crazy except the upgrade prices when you configure it. Regular SSDs would use way more power than the M chip CPU on average, since those SSDs have their own controllers, and sometimes DRAM chips, which Apple’s built-in SSDs don’t. Also the SODIMM RAM steaks use way more power since they usually have a lot more chips than Apple’s on-board RAM. If standard parts are used then expect your battery life to be halved, or the MacBooks become a lot thicker to accommodate lager batteries.

Back then when Apple Computer is like Framework, flexible and upgradeable 😅

Non removable batteries have their advantages: they can be lighter and thinner by not having a hard shell (like 18650s, plus a plastic shell), and not requiring a latch plus a robust connector; being just pouch cells integrated in the body of the laptop instead. That's not a reason to not make them easily removable with 4-6 screws for the frame and possibly 2 on the conector.

'But they're so easy to use'. I'll pay half the price and retain my mod-ability and I'll learn to use the other kind thanks very much

Is there gonna be a video of that?

@TheSpotify95

Nowadays the SSD is soldered and the RAM is part of the CPU, so organizations wheneever they get rid of their device, will not remove the hard drive and keep the laptop working, but will instead shred the entire motherboard and make it never work fully again!!

@JakeCeptionOfficial

They realised people would almost never upgrade.

@danbuchner28

Making these things easier was not good for companies. They can sell more products by making it harder to repair and upgrade.
