This film is a fictional fantastical romance between a young scholar Pu Songling and a nine-tailed fox. It tells the story of Pu Songling, a scholar who embarks on a journey to take an exam when demons are rampant. He meets Su Xian, a nine-tailed fox, who shows up to repay his kindness in the previous life. As Su Xian repeatedly protects Pu Songling, he falls in love with her. But after learning Su Xian's true identity as a fox demon, Pu Songling cannot accept it and bids farewell with her, heading to the exam venue alone. Su Xian follows him silently, protecting him again and again. She even dedicates her inner elixir to the snake demon to save Pu Songling, and finally perishes with the snake demon. Upon realizing Su Xian's sincerity and kindness, Pu Songling puts aside his prejudice against demons and confronts his feelings honestly.
