Don’t buy it if you don’t want to restore it. There are plenty of other spots you can buy. That said, in some cases I get they can’t stick strictly to original finishes. And that should be fine. I’d rather the structure be saved and finished added back as you can than the total bill being too much so you lose the building

It's their property. But if it was declared historic they do need to go through the local history agency first. However, if there is just so much wrong that repairing it equates to near or more than it would cost to replace, then really it needs to comes down. Nothing lasts forever. Antiques, etc. can be saved and reused or stored in the backroom of a museum (that's where everything is - in storage - museums never display most of what they have.) This is why maintenance in these old houses (and any house) is so important.
