My neighborhood is an infamous dog dumping site. My emaciated, scarred-up childhood rescue boxer came from that; my neighbors wrangled him to tie to a tree so we could all think of what to do, before my parents decided to adopt him after he was so sweet & gentle with us kids. He loved the front yard, LOVED my neighbors, loved walking... But the road he came in on to be dropped off, he was petrified of. He'd freeze, cry, try to walk back to the safe part of the neighborhood. He must have remembered the mean people who came from that direction, or thought that we would take him back to them. Even driving in the car down that road to go to the vet scared him, I'd have to hug him to protect him. He was also very upset at rolled-up newspaper. Our other dog at the time loved us to roll up a newspaper & play-swat at his butt, so he could get the zoomies & run around with it. But our boxer--an otherwise perpetually happy, goofy, playful boy--was terrified. His ears would go back, eyes widened, he'd shrink back, cower & whine. He'd cry seeing our other dog get "swatted" too... so that's a game we decided was not allowed at the house anymore. Paper towel rolls doing the same game? Just fine! Newspapers? Never. He lived around 10 years, & never got over those things. Even after his cancer spread too far to treat, we covered his eyes when driving him to the vet for that final time. His happiness in life was a living memory of the sorrow & terror of how it began.

I feel like they understand the feeling of being loved and cared for, like in a pack again

I hope they know that their lives have changed and they are loved. My rescue dog is the love of my life I definitely remember what life was like before my dog rescued me and every day became sunny. β€

I don't think they remember being "rescued" but they do remember the lack of love, attention, comfort and happiness to now having all of that.

Itβs not just dogs that remember being rescued and their rescuers but YouTube is full of grateful elephants, tigers, cats and even sloths.

They donβt view it as a rescue they just look at it as they found love .

I suspect that they are so shut down that they are running on instinct and probably not creating memories.
