A Brush with Bekah

So… I accidentally ingested arsenic this week. NOT CLICKBAIT, NOT JOKING.

Video coming out tomorrow, but here’s the short version:

1. I am safe and unharmed, and exhibiting no signs of acute poisoning (it’s been over 5 days now) so I can confidently say I believe I’m in the clear, and will escape this situation pretty much unscathed. THANK. GOODNESS.

2. There was a pigment that was horrifically mislabeled and misidentified by the seller, who unknowingly sold arsenic to me marketed as “bovine yellow” a nontoxic Indian Yellow replica. Later, further tests would confirm it was actually ORPIMENT— otherwise known as arsenic sulfide, an arsenic-based mineral. (This was after multiple observations, tests, and sources confirmed its “authenticity” to the seller.)

3. Not knowing this, and having been repeatedly assured of its safety and composition beforehand, I mulled this pigment without a mask, and got a pretty hearty inhalation exposure as a result. Thankfully, the only consequence I seem to have suffered was an increase of caution about ANY pigments I work with, but under different circumstances, I might have been writing a very different post right now. Again, I’m incredibly thankful that things worked out as well as they did.

The rest will have to wait for tomorrow- so be on the lookout for a video about Indian yellow and some nonsense about arsenic poisoning.😌💜💀

(Please do not harass this business owner if you come across them- this was a horrifying and tragic situation, but also one with an incredible amount of nuance as far as placing blame goes, with a lot of issues with both the seller and the supplier who sold it to the seller. I’ll address that in my video tomorrow.)

Girl You and I have had so many similar experiences. We need to get together abd swap stories sometime. By the way Arsenic sulfide has a low solubility in the body so for arsenic compounds it's one of the safer ones. Even if you ate a little bit I wouldn't be overly concerned. As a geology student I licked some once, it kinda just tasted like dirt.

Glad you’re alright. Keep in mind, ingestion and inhalation are two separate and distinct routes of chemical exposure. Yours truly, a hazmat technician.

@onbearfeet

I hope we'll get the cat's perspective on all this as well. Very important.

I’m just glad you’re okay, that’s all that matters to me! Hopefully your video can be used as a TEACHING TOOL for the seller to add more caution to how they label the things they sell going forward and that this doesn’t happen again

Glad you’re okay!!! My grandmother has been an antique dealer for a long time so we unknowingly come into contact with toxic substances/materials fairly often. We’re always prepped for it but you never know!

I feel like most of the blame should be on the supplier if it's labeled as safe. The seller was (hopefully) trusting their supplier. Im so glad it ended up being ok but scary!

Are there arsenic test strips, like for lead?

@crazystupidgamer

I had to read the whole thing to figure out how one accidentally ingests paint as an adult. I think inhaled would have been a better word to go with 😅 Good to know you're doing well

As long as you properly inform medical professionals and get the required help you need, I’m almost certain you’ll make a full recovery.

Glad you are safe. Just monitor your body for changes over the next 6 months. Just to be safe. Hair loss,brittle nail etc

@vyressi

Thankfully orpiment is arsenic sulfide which has a rather low bioavailability, think 5%-10% tops, even if you inhaled it in a one-off situation you’re unlikely to have your health impinged upon especially if you’re fine after five days. If it was arsenic trioxide we would be sending you flowers. You might have some undissolved fine dust in your lungs but without an acidic environment the material is not bio available, so you’ll be fine if you don’t make it a habit

I'm glad you are doing well, it's really easy for us to assume that what we are sold is exactly what the listing says it is... But frequently even the seller isn't 100% certain either because their supplier was misled or the supplier was being more nefarious... While it's typically more of a nuisance when this happens there are definitely times it ends more tragically. The incident a few years ago in Asia where they found baby formula 'supplemented' with melamine powder after someone figured out it would increase the protein content shown for testing purposes but not trigger alarms when tested for contamination... It did not end well for many people. So yes please be careful and vigilant given your interests
