In January 1988, Whitney Houston’s rock hit So Emotional hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and set a record at the time for most number one hits by a solo artist right before she broke the all-time record for most consecutive number ones set by the Beatles. Which solo artist did Whitney Houston surpass at the time So Emotional topped the chart?

Surprised few got this right: it’s Elvis Presley. He first set the record with five: A Big Hunk O’Love Stuck on You It’s Now or Never Are You Lonesome Tonight Surrender Elvis’ record was all-time. Then the Supremes matched it in 1965. The Beatles broke it with six in 1966 followed by the Bee Gees sharing it in 1979. Elvis held the all-time record for most consecutive number ones by a soloist until Whitney broke it. Elvis still shares most consecutive number ones by a male vocalist with Michael Jackson, who had five consecutive number one singles in 1987-88.
