Lee’s death in The Walking Dead Telltale Games. Iconic for all the right reasons.

The Hollow Knight from Hollow Knight Throughout its boss battle, you see your own kin, your own brethren repeatedly have moments of lucidity. And what does it do immediately when it regains consciousness? Tries to kill itself. It's in pain, unimaginable pain as The Radiance puppets it around. It can't bear being the imperfect vessel. It wants to die. And you are the only one who can free it from its suffering.

Maria Robotnik. I pick her especially after Shadow Generations when she and her grandfather came back, only to disappear at the end to return to their own time. Makes it worse for Shadow knowing they are going to die probably very soon after returning.

Mio/M's death in Xenoblade 3. The fact that it's less a death sentence and more a suicide after seeing and learning everything N did to bring her back, us watching Noah try to break out of his cell to save her, and her execution scene. The entire cutscene is literally almost a half-hour and the tear factory was working overtime while stabbing my heart out😭😭

Maya Amano. Spent the entirety of Persona 2: Innocent Sin getting to know her and then the game yoinks her at the last moment...and it spells the end of the world.

Sakura Ogami (Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc) Considering this is the only person across the entire franchise to kill herself rather than kill others, and that she is arguably the strongest character in the series, this is arguably the saddest death in Danganronpa.

Archibald. Still can’t believe Lysanderoth shot him in cold blood.

Bobby in Paper Mario The Origami King. You go on an entire QUESTLINE to give him the means to kill himself, not realizing what Bobby has planned, and Bobby isn't just dying but he's giving up what would have otherwise been the longest life possible for a mass-produced Bob-Omb like himself (living with no fuse) to save Olivia, using the fuse of his dead friend to do it, and reveals that dying for something with meaning is what his kind spend their whole life searching for.

Charles in The Henry Stickmin Collection Valiant Hero ending. For a primarily referential comedic choose-your-own adventure, this blindside in tone change was most definitely memorable. It sure was the greatest plan, buddy.

Makoto in Persona 3. We play the entire game as the main character only to die in the end and it’s not until after our character dies that the rest of SEES remember everything they experienced together.

Xion in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. I don't care how much people clown on Roxas' line of "Who else will I have ice cream with?" Because it's a very sad and tragic line in the context of the game because Roxas is at rock bottom, has left the only place he knew as home because everyone is lying to him, couldn't look his best friend in the eyes anymore because of the secrets he kept from him, and just had an exhausting battle with his other best friend to survive and is starting to forget her because of him having to assist in her more or less suicide, and all he could associate with good times and friendship was the ice cream he ate on the clock tower with Axel and Xion. Combine that with Xion's tragic story and it makes it hurt even harder.

• Damas in Jak 3. • Claus in Mother 3. • Kurow in Okamiden. • Nanako in Persona 4. Yes, it doesn't stick as long as you don't make the wrongest possible choice, but it's still a tear-jerker. • Professor Sada/Turo in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet. The layers to this one... • Baby in Super Metroid.

Arthur Morgan’s death in Red Dead Redemption 2. When you realize he has tuberculosis and that there’s no cure for it, the feeling of inevitability hits hard, especially in the final acts when he lays dying on the rocks and watches the sunrise as D’Angelo’s “Unshaken” plays you out.
