As someone with OCD (diagnosed) this sounds like he believed that these thoughts were desires in that the person wants to act upon them but don't due to using compulsions, glad this isn't seen as true as the thoughts are not desires but a deep internal torture as they are not wanted and cause the person horrific distress.

When we say that it lead to modern ideas, is it that people thought "let's not do what this Freud guy was doing" so it resulted in better understanding ?😅 I should learn more about Freud. I truly struggle to value his work. He surely achieved more than I imagine. Well I hope so..
