No just double pitstop. Everybody knew that lap 7 was the golden lap to pit because of the pitstop rules specifically for this race.

There is a freeze frame about 4 minutes into the race highlights on the f1 YouTube channel that explains the situation as clearly as is necessary. Every single car on the grid pitted during the safety car on lap 7 to ensure two equal stints of 25 laps afterwards. Except snaps fingers the McLarens! Aka How To Lose a Piastri in 10 Days

Any kid who had played wreckfest twice would have pitted Piastri. Only explanation is they didn't want Oscar gaining more points on Lando. If Max is in front next race and Oscar is ahead of Lando i bet Mclaren ask Oscar to let Lando past 🤦♂

i think redbull made a last second call to get out under safety car , after that Mclaren had to stick with both out , if Norris was last , they would have pit Norris and kept piastri out if redbull did the same thing last second

Nah I just think McLaren make bad decisions on these things. I get Piastri staying out as they didnt know what Max would do but what I don't get is why Norris didn't follow Verstappen in and split the strategies. Max was always going to come in once Piastri stayed out

Team McLaren really messed up Oscar big time was the most common sense decision to make, maybe the last season we see Oscar over there on team orange they gifted Max the victory today. Is team McLaren snorting lines back there? just so many blunders over there at McLaren this whole year Oscar and Lando doing the best they can driving brilliantly its team McLaren that keep letting them down.

1000% they'll make calls to benefit Lando but will NEVER do anything to help Oscar and when they make Oscar help Lando win in Abu Dhabi I hope he's happy being the number 2 driver forever. That's Lando's team and we all see it now and it'll be set in stone in Abu Dhabi when Oscar is playing support like the number 2 driver he is now

Yes, but not because they actually wanted to favor one driver over the other. It’s cause they were afraid of appearing to favor any driver by trying a different strategy. AND they can’t just pit both because the team is terminally afraid of double stacking. They basically never ever do it even when it makes sense. They chickened out essentially. Lando should have followed max in and told them to just deal.

I personally think they should have split the strategy and actually pitted Norris. Even in the first 7 laps it was clear that Piastri has much better pace and therefore had a higher chance of regaining time on a weird strategy. Norris pitting would have kept the proper original strategy, and Piastri with the faster car could have improvised and made back time

I think they definitely should have split the strategies. Being first in that situation can be a disadvantage so I was surprised they didn't pit Lando.

Does anyone disagree with this. If Norris is in last place (for example), McLaren clearly pit Piastri under safety car on lap 7.
