Jurassic Park Atmospheres

What's your favourite track from the original JP trilogy soundtrack?

I think mine has to be the music that plays just before the end credits in the original movie.

It starts off very tender and melancholic with the dinosaur theme on the piano, but then it swells into this big triumphant fanfair with shiny bells and I love how the counter melody and harmony in the brass section is replacing the choir from when we hear this track earlier in the movie during the brachiosaurus scene 🦕

The Lost World soundtrack isn't as instantly recognisable, but it has so many moody and primal tracks that have such a dangerous safari adventure vibe 🏞️

Digsite and Dinosaur Flyby have to be my favourites from Jurassic Park III as well. It's obviously very different from the other 2 movies and is almost exclusively just iterations of the Carnivore theme, but the subtle moments of tenderness around the Kirby family and Alan are where it shines 🥚

Here’s the new end screen for the Dino-sound effect videos!

I’m trying to make it look like you’re browsing merch in a Jurassic Park gift shop. I’ll be uploading these videos starting next month 🦖🎁🎄

Jurassic Park Atmospheres

Good news!

I’m more than half way through editing some Jurassic Park dinosaur sound effect packs which I will be posting in the run up to Christmas with thumbnail images reminiscent of the original JP toy lines for that classic Jurassic feel 🦖

A lot of the dinosaur sound effect videos on YouTube are re-uploads full of unnecessary repetitions, many are without pauses between each sound and none that I can find are organised in any logical manner which makes finding exact sounds for editing very tedious.

They also tend to have a lot of strange artefacts like background noise (music, dialogue or other movie sounds) or reverb, they sometimes clip above 0db causing distortion or are panned too much to one side. So, I’ve edited them to cut out exact duplicates (including ones with minor pitch changes), focused them to the middle of the stereo field, normalised the volume, reduced imperfections using EQ and noise filters and then painstakingly organised them from soft growls and grunts to loud screams and triumphant roars 🔊

I’ve also created some custom sounds using the same methods and sources used for the movies; particularly for dinosaurs that didn’t appear much or that had very unique and hard to find vocal libraries: such as the Buck T-Rex, raptor hatchling and other infant dinosaurs 🥚

So if anyone has creative projects they’d like to work on and you need JP SFX, or if you just want to listen to all the different JP dinosaur sound libraries, you’ll be able to find them easier with timestamps on my channel + all dinosaurs will be organised into movie roster playlists; Jurassic Park, The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 with matching "box art" images (I might make some for the Jurassic World dinosaurs and those that appeared in the books if I get more time)

Once all are posted, there will be a Christmas special ambience track set in the JP gift shop featuring filtered versions of dinosaur sounds to make them sound like toys with a relaxing nostalgic music suite in the background 🦕

Jurassic Park Atmospheres

I've been re-watching JP3 during my research of foley design and I'm gonna say it...

I dont care what anyone says about this movie. It may be pretty clunky, but it's an absolute nostalgia fest and it has so many redeeming qualities in terms of cinematography, colour, subtle moments, casting and even the music - that I don't find in the newer movies at all.

I remember watching this in the cinema, age 8 with my older brother, my cousin and his dad. It was one of the best days of my childhood by far.

The hype when I saw the TV trailer and all the TV guide reviews and all the toys that I absolutely died for was unparalleled. I think I only found out about the movie from seeing the toys at first and wondering what the dinosaur on the logo was. Then I consulted the old (out of date) dinosaur encyclopedia I had and bingo.

There was a cool TV trailer which I can't seem to find on YouTube, but it started with Paul shouting "Dr Grant, you should come look at this!". I recorded it on tape so I watched it frame by frame afterwards.

Needless to say I was obsessed with dinosaurs around that time and I remember loving this particular scene. I loved the new raptor look and sound design and the jungle in this movie felt so dense even though most of it was filmed in a studio. My older brother was still coming to terms with the T-rex being killed off but I didn't mind at the time 😅

This movie by far does the best job of compositing the cgi elements. There's a few bits where it looks a bit too floaty and there are some weird design choices with the brachiosaurus and Pteranodons having teeth, but otherwise this movie actually has really nice cinematography and colour, especially around the bird cage scene. I love how this scene looks in terms of colour and attention to detail in the sets too. I was on the edge of my seat at this part (even if it makes no sense that a raptor was just standing there waiting to be seen 😅)

I wish I could unsee all the movies so I could watch them again.

Jurassic Park Atmospheres

I've been doing a lot of research for potential future projects this week and really digging into the lore of both the Jurassic Park/lost world movies and novels to get a better understanding of the island’s endemic fauna, geography and topography... And oh man, is this franchise messy...

🗺️ Maps
Though the first book is remarkably faithful to the movie adaptation in terms of story beats, there are some noticeable differences in locations, especially since the addition of Jurassic World to the franchise. Even within the original movie's own lore, there are many variations of the map showing enclosures and buildings in different places. Fans have tried to make composites of all the different Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna maps and their own aesthetic versions of the safari adventure tour through videos and fan made games with great care, though it's a shame the lore isn't consistent.

🚙 Safari Tour
The map contradictions make the task of creating a safari tour ASMR track very complicated. I also like to create realistic non looping audio - as if heard from the POV of a character or captured by a field microphone (which I'm used to using as a videographer), but a microphone or character wouldn't really hear many dinosaur sounds (or even bird calls) as most of that sound would be dampened inside the vehicle unless the windows were down for the entire ride. There is also the question of whether to create a functioning Park tour ambience or go full screen accuracy and have a tour that ends abruptly 🦖

🏞️ Other attractions
I'm also thinking of other possible tour routes and rides that weren't operational or conceived at the time of the movie events, like the jungle river cruise or maybe even a guided nature trail in a secluded part of the island where guests are accompanied by an interactive CD ROM that teaches you about the ecosystem and endemic fauna (which I obsess about tirelessly).

🦜 Birds
A large part of making these ambience tracks screen accurate is identifying the numerous birds, frogs and insects that you can hear in the background foley throughout the movies. There is a bit of a myth circulating online that the sound designers exclusively used rainforest recordings from costa rica (near where the fictional island is supposed to be located) to make the movie more faithful to the books. This isn't entirely true as you can hear many species of birds and frogs from north America and Australia such as American bull frogs, cane toads, Eastern whipbirds and on Isla Sorna: kookaburras and ravens.
As the movies were shot in Hawaii and the redwood forest in California (which has few if any birds as a result of the low insect population), it's more than likely that the sound designers used sounds from a variety of sources. This makes bird IDs extra difficult to pin down as none can be confirmed with visibility or search apps which use your location to narrow down searches.
The Jurassic World Evolution games seem to share some of the same ambient qualities to the movies, but again, the birds are so difficult to identify as there are overlapping layers of audio often from different geographical locations.

In the meantime, I've made some progress on a Dilophosaurus ambience track and there are a few WIP snippets on my patreon. I've also been rebuilding dinosaur sound effect libraries for making future edits quicker.

I hope you're enjoying most recent uploads of the park gates and visitor centre. If you'd like to hear a safari tour track, let me know your thoughts and ideas for the tour route and what dinosaurs you'd like to hear.

Here's a test export of the background audio from inside the RV Trailer before the T-Rex attack. I had spent a long time recording rain inside a car, getting the EQ just right, making lots of unique radio transmission sounds similar to the movie and organising a sound library for the infant T-rex which is largely made up of hyenas, baby camels, cougars and bobcat sounds. Sadly all this work has to be done again as I lost everything in the hard drive crash.
I had planned to make a safe for sleep version without any dinosaur noises and then a more story driven track based off the scene from the book.
