I want to say Freya is working hard at helping me get the first coaster orders out the door, but I can’t even cover for her this time… she’s sleeping on the job. šŸ˜‚ā¤ļøšŸ˜

Ok.. so I’m ready to do a soft launch on the Shopify storefront. I haven’t used Shopify before, and all the new cross border duties going the other way are an extra curveball, so I’m learning as I go.

Please be patient with me if I have to work out any kinks. I know Canada is good to go, but I have no way to pre-test for the US folks and beyond except to just try it. I don’t have any coasters or cutting boards on there yet, as I need to make sure everything is working properly first, before I add those extra complications, lol, but if anyone is looking for a cap or a tee, mug, etc, it should be ready to go.

I’m using a different fulfillment company for the website than I was for YouTube- it’s also print on demand, so can take a little bit longer than a normal order from a store but so far, seems to be faster than Spring. If all goes well with the soft launch, I’ll be switching the linked store on YouTube to my Shopify page as well, and then can finally get the coasters and other handmade items on there too. :-)

Depending on where you are, extra duties may apply (as you all know by now). For example, I ordered some stuff for myself to test the process- the hat was fulfilled in Canada, and I obviously didn’t have any extra duties of course. But my tee and hoodie were fulfilled in the US and crossed the border so I had extra fees related there. All three items were ordered at the same time but the way it works is they are produced and shipped from whichever centre can handle the order the fastest. So… I’m relying on your feedback for this process!

Thank you for your patience!

If you want to have a look, you should be able to view transcendfurnituregallery.com/ now. :-)

Hey everyone! Just an update. As most of you know now, after viewing a recent short video I posted, I had a workshop accident and badly lacerated my left thumb. Trigger warning for anyone squeamish.

This was on Friday evening, and it was literally the last cut I was going to make for the day. It’s something I definitely knew I should have done on the bandsaw, but sadly was lazy, for lack of a better term, and didn’t want to haul the dust collector over to it to make that cut, so attempted it on the table saw, KNOWING it was sketchy af. Don’t get complacent… even for a ā€œquickā€ cut. Trust me.

I spent 12 hours bleeding and waiting in our small town emergency department. Finally, at 5:30am, I gave up and left, driving about a half hour to another hospital. There, I was triaged, stitched, and on my way in under an hour. But… he initially said when he saw it that I would need five stitches. However, after three, he said that he wasn’t sure the extra two were needed. So left it at three, gave me some extra bandages, and sent me on my way with a scrip for antibiotics, just in case.

Fast forward to Sunday afternoon. The area where he SHOULD have done the stitches was still not closing, and was bleeding throughout the day. With a power saw injury, it’s not slicing through the way a knife does - it’s literally removing a strip of skin and tissue the width of the blade kerf. So even with using the steri strips that I picked up to try and close that section, it’s not possible to pinch the skin fully closed, because an eighth of an inch of skin is actually no longer there. I did go back that evening to ask about a fourth stitch, but after waiting another 4.5 hours, I just left.

Yesterday it looked pretty gnarly, though no signs of obvious infection. I did start the antibiotics just in case. Today, it’s looking a bit better, and the steri strips I think are doing an ok job of at least keeping that unstitched area stable (though not fully closed) enough to begin closing.

Still painful, and still at risk, but I feel a bit better about it today.

Anyway… again, I wasn’t sure about sharing this initially, but the message is too important not to, regardless of how embarrassed I feel about doing something I knew better about. There’s a misconception that it’s only newbies that can be hurt this way. But for newbies, that’s lack of experience. For experienced people, complacency and thinking ā€œit’s sketchy but it’ll be fineā€ WILL eventually catch up to you. Don’t take short cuts. Don’t use tools for things they weren’t designed for, and protect yourself.

Check these out- my two new boards are PERFECT for spooky October! The patterns in the end grain are so cool!

I’ve had SO many people asking about purchasing cutting boards that there’s no way I’ll be able to find time to make enough, haha. So I think what I’ll do is post a few (towards the end of the month) on eBay, and people who are interested can bid, giving those who are interested all a chance at them. Plus eBay is well known and trusted. I’d lose a bit to eBay fees, but I still feel it might be the best option in this specific situation- unlike the coasters, of which I have much more stock for the website.

Just wanted to share that info- I’ll let everyone know when I’m ready to post a few. :-)

Speaking of coasters- most of you know the issues with the postal service being on strike, plus the new duties buyers in the US have to pay, but I’m going to give it a try- I think I’ll post maybe 20 sets of coasters to start with, as a a trial, as see how that goes. If it goes relatively smoothly, I’ll add more asap. So stay tuned for that update as well. :-)

I’m loving how many of you mentioned that you don’t typically watch videos like this but actually really enjoyed this and watched it all! I had a lot of fun creating these, some to sell and some to give to other rescues to sell- it was a really fun video to make. Thank you for watching and commenting- you’re the best!

I would encourage anyone who refinishes furniture (especially mid century onward) to watch this! I have no affiliation with this channel, but this was a great, informative video!

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen about veneer making for the purpose of plywood- a substrate I see often with more modern pieces I work on. It’s actually a fascinating process!

Understanding WHY manufacturers moved to plywood and pressed wood as substrates is important. And knowing how every part of a piece you’re working on came to be can help make certain choices and repairs easier. :-)
