Sketch Habit invites artists and art lovers, including myself, to explore the world and art history through a different lens by embracing the constant practice of drawing and painting.
[2 YEARS] It's been 2 years since I started to post more often on this channel and we are getting closer to 10k subscribers! Thank you so much for your continued support! So, what's next?
The last 7 months have been tough as I was/am dealing with many mixed feelings about my career. After a lot of self reflection, studying, and planning I feel like I have a good plan for the channel going forward. I want to divided the content into 3 main areas:
- Sketching: Discussions with the community & encouragement so that more people start sketching or get back to it (including myself). Videos exploring and building on top of perspective drawing, techniques & medium, different topics/themes, and my own explorations. That's why I decided to rebrand the channel to Sketch Habit.
- Books, lots of books: I have a big collection of art books, which is also constantly growing, and I would love to make more content doing book reviews, sketching from their content, suggesting exercises, and discussing the topics with this community.
- Artists & Artwork: I know a LOT of different artists, from contemporary working in the entertainment industry to masters from the past. I tend to take for granted this knowledge and I believe it should be shared with the community, including the things that inspire me the most in their work and encourage sketching/copying/learning together through my own explorations.
What do you think? What artists and books you'd like to see here What kinds of videos on sketching and perspective drawing?
[NEW VIDEO SERIES - PERSPECTIVE DRAWING] Hey everyone, long time, no see! Hope all of you are well!
I have a lot going on, so I haven't been able to post here consistently. I'm glad to say that I'll be posting again soon and that I'm starting a series focused on Drawing and especially Perspective. It's going to be based on Perspective Made Easy to make it easier for everyone to have access to it, as it is a book in the public domain and/or very cheap to find as a printed version through Amazon or secondhand. I published this video below a while back talking about alternative books on Perspective. If you haven't seen it, is a good place to start.
With that being said, I'd love to know some of your biggest doubts and challenges on the topic of Perspective Drawing, so that I can try and cover it on the videos! :)
One of the biggest mistakes I made throughout my art journey was to get lost in one specific aspect of art (in my case Structure/Logic) and forget what art is supposed to be used for, especially in the entertainment industry. Now as a creative recruiter and mentor, I see students and junior artists making the same mistake over and over again. In my recent video on reimagining/reorganizing the Art Fundamentals, I discussed this topic extensively and tried arranging the art learning process into 4 pillars. You can watch my video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz4j_...
Someone in the comments suggested that the linear structure I proposed wasn't giving the Creative aspects their due importance, so in this image below I tried rearranging so that Aesthetic aspects are a little higher, but combined with Technique and Structure form the basis for Creative applications. What do you think? I'll use this framework for a lot of the discussions I have planned for the channel going forward, so any chance to fine-tune it is really welcome :)
I'd also recommend Feng Zhu's latest Design Cinema videos at @FZDSCHOOL which I believe discuss this topic beautifully.
Here are some of the great artists who worked on the development of The Jungle Book live-action movie by Disney. I've discussed this content in depth in my video about using references: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqWPb...
One of my favorite guitar players dropping an invaluable knowledge bomb right here. I feel the same for art fundamentals, tools, and tricks, you need to learn them, forget them, and just make good art. Turn that passive vocabulary into active vocabulary. But remember, it's not immediate. Thoughts?
I promise there will be new videos anytime soon! But for now, let us appreciate the amazing environment art behind The Road to El Dorado from DreamWorks.
Sad to see that more than 80% of you agreed about feeling overwhelmed looking at art on social media. I really believe all of that started with the transition to Facebook and we became more and more obsessed with comparing ourselves to others. The number of followers, number of posts, number of likes, and less and less about the strength of the community and all the learnings from the artistic journey. It's part of the mission of this channel to try and help fix that one step at a time.
What are some of your suggestions for fixing this? Have you seen my video on Social Media (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLwAz...)? I'd love to read your thoughts in the comments :)
Do you feel overwhelmed by seeing art on social media?
I do, all the time! What paths to take? How am I gonna get that good? How can people be so consistent in posting new art? In my opinion, this is the biggest threat to artists' growth nowadays, over comparison and main character syndrome. I've discussed this and more in my video on social media for artists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLwAz...
Share some of your thoughts and things you'd love to hear more about on this topic :)
