John McCormack was one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century. He was at ease in all genres of song, be it classical, opera, popular, Irish ballad or lieder. He is regarded by many as the greatest exponent of the music of Handel and Mozart of the last century with his legendary recordings of 'Come my beloved' and 'il mio tesoro' being a testament to this.
He was Ireland's first global superstar, and although many have followed him, no other Irish artist/s has ever matched his popularity, including U2. In 1929 Twentieth Century Fox paid him $500,000 to star in the film "Song O' My Heart", which in today's money is anything from $6m to $60m. To put it simply, he was a phenomenon!
